This is the first of a series of paintings "inspired" by our trip to Italy last May. I can't wait to go back...not quite finished, still wet.

I am very pleased to announce that I now have paintings at the Silver Lake Gallery at 138 Adams St. in Newton MA. The proprietor, Jim Beatrice, is an old friend and fellow student of Henry Hensche. Jim's paintings are beautiful and he also represents another of my favorites, Margaret McWethy.

Two new paintings

Both of these paintings were started on toned boards. I find it somewhat irritating at first because I am so accustomed to a white ground. I like the final results, though. Both are done with brushes.

A "Rob" Painting

I was working on a painting this past summer in Provincetown when my friend and fellow painter Hilda Neily came along. We frequently paint together and talk about each other's work, an interchange that I find very valuable. At one point in our conversation she looked behind me and said, "Oh! There's a 'Rob' painting."

She was right. I did this study the next day.

It is with great regret that I announce the end of my association with the Wohlfarth Gallery of Provincetown, MA, and Washington DC. I have been with the Wohlfarth Gallery for most of its time in existence and it has been a mutually beneficial relationship. I feel, though, that it is time for me to move on.

Stay tuned for an announcement of upcoming plans.

The Artist's Cemetery

This is a cemetery at the First Congregational Church in Truro where a number of prominent Provincetown and Truro Artists are buried. I have counted at least fourteen who are buried here including Charles Hawthorne and Hans Hoffman.

I don't know why the various Provincetown artists are buried here rather than in Provincetown itself, but it is certainly a beautiful setting and one of my favorite destinations for a walk.

I also like to paint here. The headstones grow a particular yellow lichen that I find attractive.

The Artist's Cemetery Oil 14x18

In answer to a question about where I got my information: I have extensive familiarity with Cape Cod artists, both past and present and I have actually spent a great deal of time exploring in this cemetery. I have not gone through the cemetery records, so it is possible that there are even more artists buried in this cemetery than the ones that I have found simply by walking around.

Green Herons in Trees

Green Herons in Trees Oil 16x20

I was walking at the local nature center on a very foggy late summer morning and I saw twenty or more green herons sitting in trees. It was interesting and somewhat eerie. That was the inspiration for this painting.

Finished painting

This is the finished version of the painting that I started on 2/22. I prefer the foreground as I have it here, rather than the way that I started it.

Another recent start. This is a view along the road to Needles Overlook at Canyonlands, Utah.

I have been working some with acrylics this winter. I have found that for some of my urban landscapes like this one they work very well.

I will be interested in seeing how they work when I can get outside.
